What We Believe

These are the essentials we believe at Smith Grove, and they are woven into everything we do. These values shape the way we think, act, speak, and love one another. They have implications in our individual lives and in our life together in community.

Smith Grove is associated with the Southern Baptist Convention. Below you can read through our core beliefs. For a more comprehensive statement of our denomination’s convictions, follow this link to the Baptist Faith & Message.

  • The Trinity

We believe there is one eternal God who exists in three persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit (The Trinity). God created and sustains His universe and all its creatures. God is totally loving, holy, powerful, and wise, and He will ultimately judge the world.

  • Jesus

Jesus is the incarnate Son of God. He is the Christ, or Messiah - the anointed King. He was born of a virgin and conceived by the Holy Spirit. He is the God-Man who lived a sinless life, died for our sins, was buried, and rose from the grave. Jesus has ascended into heaven and will visibly return to the earth.

  • Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit is the fully divine Spirit of God. The Spirit has worked throughout history to inspire the authors of Scripture, illuminate the truth to believers, and call people to Jesus to be saved. He dwells within Christians, comforting them, cultivating Christian character, and bestowing spiritual gifts for the church. The Spirit convicts the world of sin, righteousness, and the judgment to come. He empowers the believer and the church in worship, evangelism, and service.

  • The Bible

We believe the Bible is the Holy Word of God. It is God’s complete message to mankind recorded with perfect accuracy in the original languages of Scripture. It is the infallible final authority for faith and practice of Christian living.

  • People

We believe people are God’s special creations. They are made in His image but through the fall of sin are utterly depraved and unable to change this condition apart from the saving work of Jesus Christ.

  • Salvation

Salvation is God’s gift of redemption to people, offered freely to all who accept Jesus as Lord and Savior. It is given by grace and received only by personal faith in the person of Jesus Christ. Every person who is truly saved is eternally secure in Christ. Those who do not receive God’s gift of salvation die in their sins and will spend eternity in hell.

Salvation includes regeneration (being “born again,” a change of heart that leads us to repentance from sin towards God), justification (God’s full, gracious forgiveness of our sins, giving us peace with God), sanctification (growth in spiritual maturity through the Holy Spirit), and glorification (the culmination of salvation and final state of redeemed believers).

  • The Church

We believe the universal church is the body and bride of Christ, which is made up of redeemed people throughout the ages and from every nation, tribe, and tongue.

The local church is a congregation of baptized believers with Christ as their head. The church covenants together to follow Jesus in His teachings, ordinances (Baptism and the Lord’s Supper), and commission to spread the gospel to all nations.

For Southern Baptists, each congregation is autonomous and operates under the Lordship of Christ through democratic processes. Each member is accountable to Christ as Lord. All members of the church are spiritually gifted to build up the church. We believe men and women are gifted for service in the church, but the office of pastor is limited to men as qualified by Scripture.
